The IHR Strengthening Workforce Development Team is working to support professional development of Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) fellows at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University.  Between 14th -17th March 2023 the team co-delivered a Leadership Development Module to 16 students in the training programme.

The purpose of this module is to provide development opportunities for the trainees on the FETP to build leadership and management principles with the aim of supporting them in the field.

The programme used a mix of face to face and virtual delivery to ensure the greatest reach and levels of engagement with delegates.

The module content was geared around developing confident people managers who:

  • Understand their own leadership strengths and development areas
  • Are able to consciously lead teams
  • Can effectively motivate colleagues

Throughout the sessions the teamshared models and concepts for delegates to explore, digest and contemplate, including personality styles, leadership styles, team roles, growth mindset, personal impact and vision setting, and more. Fun, practical activities were ised to show the group the importance of working together as a team to achieve results.

During the final face to face workshop delegates had the opportunity to consolidate their learning through revisiting their vision statements and understanding the next steps in their leadership journey. The group was set a short assessment to be reviewed by the facilitators. The programme ended with some closing words from Dr Banda from ZNPHI and Dr Sialubanje from Levy Mwanawasa Medical University , and delegates received their certificates of achievement.
