Marking a pivotal collaboration between the UK Health Security Agency’s (UKHSA) International Health Regulations Strengthening Project (IHR-SP) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Annual Performance Review meeting took place in July. This event highlighted the progress and strategic efforts made over the past 12 months to enhance CBRN preparedness and response activities in Ethiopia.

The three-day event was held in Bishoftu Town, Ethiopia with 34 participants from the EPHI CBRN team, regional CBRN focal, and chemical poisoning pilot sites which are selected from regions designated for reporting and improving response strategies for chemical poisoning incidents.

The objective of the meeting was to provide a forum for sharing experiences and best practices, addressing challenges in chemical poisoning surveillance and response, extracting key lessons to enhance ongoing performance. UKHSA IHR-SP expertise was essential to providing support by facilitating the meeting, including planning, and delivering sessions.

The Review Meeting highlighted the need for an increase in focus on CBRN surveillance and response across various administrative levels. As a result, IHR-SP is  committing to enhancing strategic coordination and collaboration, contributing in capacity building initiatives, and facilitating knowledge transfer programs. These actions will be supported through targeted development of materials and enhancing the collaborative networks to ensure effective implementation and sustainability.

Theefforts of the UKHSA and IHR-SP in Ethiopia build upon previous initiatives aimed at strengthening health security frameworks. These include efforts in improving the coordination and collaboration work on chemical events. The collaboration aligns with the broader goals of IHR-SP to support member states in developing resilient public health systems.

In closing, the Director of Public Health Response and Recovery much-admired the collaborative spirit between UKHSA and EPHI:

"This meeting underscores our commitment to strengthening CBRN Surveillance and Response capabilities across Ethiopia through coordinated efforts. By addressing challenges and encouraging collaboration, we are placing the groundwork for a more prepared future on CBRN work. Continued partnership with UKHSA and other key stakeholders are vital for achieving these goals and ensuring community safety and security."

Mr. Medhanye Habtetsion– EPHI Director of Public Health Response and Recovery Directorate

‘’By ensuring effective coordination and partnership through facilitating collaborative discussions, together we can optimise CBRN response strategies and tackle key challenges. This close partnership enabled us to integrate expertise, enhance national capacities, and drive forward our shared objectives in strengthening CBRN preparedness and resilience through IHR-SP strategies.’’
